Construction on the first phase of the £100m regeneration of South Shields has already begun, as part of the South Shields “365 Master Plan”. The Master Plan is an ambitious vision to reinvigorate and bring extra vitality to the South Shields town centre.
The redevelopment is being led by Muse Developments, one of the country’s leading names in urban regeneration, in partnership with South Tyneside Council, who are now pressing on with plans to transform the town.
The first phase of development in the “365 Master Plan” will see the construction of The Word, the North East Centre for the Written Word, a new cultural attraction celebrating the written word in all its forms from poetry, screen plays and books, stage plays and songs. The Word will also provide a rolling programme of exhibitions of regional and national significance, as well as being home to thenew central library and providing new immersive and experiences. This phase of development will also see much needed improvements made to the adjoining Market Place and a new 40 space car park on vacant land at Harton Quays.
The second phase in the regeneration of the town will see the construction of a new transport interchange in the heart of the town on Fowler Street and Keppel Street. This will create a striking point of arrival into the town centre and will bring greater connectivity to the town, linking the Riverside and the Foreshore areas. This will include the construction of a new bus station to bring all the town’s services into the same area making changing buses more straightforward. This will link with a relocated Metro station which will provide escalators and lifts to the platform making access easier than the existing station.
Future regeneration will also seek to improve South Shields retail and family leisure offer, further increasing the town’s standing as a year round tourist destination.
The ambitious £100m 365 Master Plan has the vision of boosting the local economy and improving the visitor experience, increasing employment opportunities whilst also considering the wider environment and has the overall aim of improving community life in South Shields.
Future phases of the £100million “365 Master Plan” regeneration of the town centre, will include increased shopping and leisure provision, the development of a new travel interchange all with the aim of improving community life in South Shields.
