Phase One of 365 Regeneration Complete!
With the opening week of The Word, the National Centre for the Written Word, welcoming some 20,000 visitors to the unique venue, the first phase of South Tyneside Council’s and development partner, Muse Developments’, ambitious £100m 365 Regeneration of South Shields has now been completed and universally acknowledged as highly successful.
Whilst the refurbished Market Place and The Word has been attracting all the attention, the 365 team have been working on future phases of the regeneration plan particularly Phase II, the state-of-the-art Transport Interchange which will house the Metro platforms and bus interchange.
David Wells, Regional Director at Muse Developments, commented, “One of the priorities of the whole regeneration is to ensure better connectivity between the Foreshore and Riverside areas to enable South Shields to develop as a visitor and tourist destination, further boosting the economy. The Transport Interchange is a vital part of this process and we are currently involved in negotiations with various parties to ensure we can commence construction next year.”
Councillor Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, added: “We’re obviously delighted with the success achieved so far with the refurbished Market Place and the opening of The Word and the national publicity and acclaim this has brought South Shields, but the work continues on the overall master plan to regenerate the whole town. The news that British Telecom is increasing their local employment is, we hope, just the first of such announcements that heralds a new era of prosperity for the town and for which we are providing an urban infrastructure that will not only help retain existing businesses, but also attract new investment.”
